If you think that there is a frame of reference different than yours and yet there needs to be accomodation you always emphasize similarity and never a difference. Social contract and deference to authority is important part of Islamic thought - coequal with fighting the injustice, which occupies big part of islamic thought. If the authority of liberal state (whatever it means)is just to Muslims then the duty of them is to defend it. Why do you think overhelming majority of muslims were in happy service of British and Russian empire - it is because the authority should be respected and was. Do not believe those who tell the opposite. The difference now of course that Muslims are forced to integrate into a wider society and become citizens rather than subjects. This is new concept that is being investigated by likes of Ramadan or Kaya.Hazar Nesimihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03906681712746544309noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19748732.post-41137229634738184802007-12-31T21:22:00.000+00:002007-12-31T21:22:00.000+00:00I don't think fear is responsible for what March i...I don't think fear is responsible for what March is saying. On the contrary, he is just re-stating the obvious, and what he says makes a lot of sense. People who reject the very basis of the society they live in are a danger to themselves and to others, especially when they have no viable alternative.

What I meant with my last paragraph was that maybe we have lost sight of the very points that March is making, and that we are in danger of destroying the system from within.

Don't be too quick to dismiss that system either. There are deep problems, yes, but where are there not? And it has looked lost before this (in the Thirties) and not only survived, but flourished.NoolaBeulahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02181815160785834692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19748732.post-35999624358952574592007-12-31T20:53:00.000+00:002007-12-31T20:53:00.000+00:00Yeah, sounds like panic to me. I think the source ...Yeah, sounds like panic to me. I think the source of the fear however is not that the muslims are taking over or are ever going to have it their way, it is to do with the failings of the liberal system with regards to its incapacity to deliver anything constant or fixed to hang on to, it is constantly shifting and questionning itself. Ultimately it wears societies down, especially when some change triggers fear and panic. A liberal system can only prove its ultimate worth if it somehow manages to overcome fear whilst holding on to the values that make it liberal. I find it difficult to conceive how that could be achieve or if it is achieveable at all.Vannyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11814025517185126126noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19748732.post-48820919953275984242007-12-31T08:53:00.000+00:002007-12-31T08:53:00.000+00:00Timoty - you are my hero!
